Cut and fill numbers drive real budget and logistics decisions, but the calculation itself is often treated as a black box. Here's what's actually happening inside it.

Cut and fill volumes tell a project team how much material needs to leave a site, how much needs to be brought in, or whether the site can be balanced internally. The number matters enormously for budget and hauling logistics — worth understanding rather than just trusting.
Two surfaces, compared
At its core, the calculation compares an existing-ground surface model to a proposed-design surface model and measures the volume of difference between them at every point. Where proposed grade is lower than existing, that's cut. Where it's higher, that's fill.
Method matters more than most people expect
Average-end-area methods, grid methods, and full TIN-to-TIN comparisons can produce meaningfully different volumes on the same data, especially on irregular terrain. For budget-level estimates the difference may not matter; for a tight-margin bid it can.
Shrinkage and swell aren't rounding errors
Soil compacts when placed as fill and loosens when excavated, and the shrink/swell factor for a given soil type can shift required import or export volumes by a meaningful percentage. Skipping this step is one of the more common ways a cut/fill estimate ends up wrong in the field.

Whether that trade-off is worth making is a conversation between the numbers and the design intent, not something the software decides on its own.
